Buiatti Srl: From Footwear to Innovative Handcrafted Guitars

Walter Buiatti, partner and head of CAD/CAM design at Buiatti Srl, a company with three generations of experience in the footwear industry, has always had a passion for music.

In addition to his involvement in the company's industrial activities, Walter embarked on a journey into crafting handcrafted guitars. He collaborated with luthiers to refine his skills, combining them with the expertise gained in the footwear sector.

Challenge

Walter's goal has always been to create unique handcrafted guitars known for their design and acoustic characteristics.

Solution

To realize his dream, Walter turned to H-ARP, a specialist in additive manufacturing and rapid prototyping. Buiatti Srl and the TEC4I FVG hub joined forces to leverage the opportunities offered by 3D printing and new technologies.

Joint Design: Walter and the H-ARP team designed guitar components, including frets, bridges, and tuning pegs. Using 3D printing and collaborating with luthiers and expert guitarists, they created functional prototypes based on original designs with desired performance.

Refinement and Production: After testing the prototypes and receiving feedback from experts, they refined the design and perfected the guitars. Once the desired level was achieved, Buiatti Srl initiated the production of handcrafted guitars, maintaining the goal of small-scale, made-in-Italy production.

Benefits
  • Streamlined Process: Thanks to the use of 3D printing and advanced technologies, the guitar production process was streamlined, allowing for greater precision and reduced production times.
  • Use of Unique Materials: Additive technology enabled the use of innovative materials that improved the sound performance of the guitars. (For example, the use of bulk metallic glass contributed to achieving lightweight and unique design).
  • Brand Recognition: Buiatti guitars received acclaim from talented guitarists like Gino Marielli of Tazenda, singer Paola Tagliaferro, and Andrea Zanzottera, who also used the instruments for soundtracks. By combining passion and craftsmanship skills acquired in the footwear sector with advanced technologies offered by 3D printing, Buiatti Srl created unique guitars that meet the needs of artists and the market.

This collaboration demonstrates that innovation can be successfully integrated into traditional craftsmanship, leading to high-quality and distinctive products.
